Contract Negotiations in the Dominican Republic

On my previous post, "How to get a job teaching in the DR"  I mentioned that I found various employment opportunities on DR1.com and learn4good.com. Here are some more helpful job websites.

Numbers 1-3 are fairs in the United States. September to early November is a good application time for these fairs because it is a long process (you still have time)😃👍. They pay the most and offer the best benefits along with DR1.com and learn4good.com. After the new year, I would advice you to email the schools you are interested in directly.

Teacher Contract

There are two types of teacher contracts: foreign hire and home country.  They have very important distinctions and the benefits are drastically different. A foreign hire simply means that you were offered the job when you lived in the United States or Europe. Home country means you were already living in the Dominican Republic when hired. Here are the differences👫

Foreign Hire
1. Higher salary
(pay in dollars and/or pesos)
2. Bonus
3. Flight reimbursement🛬
4. Housing

5. Utilities included
6. Health Insurance

Home Country

1. Local salary
2. Health Benefits

Please remember it is important to know if the school you are applying for pays in dollars or pesos. It is also important to know if the students pay in dollars or pesos. If they pay in dollars and you as the teacher get paid in pesos feel free to negotiate. You have

everything to gain.  Try to get the highest💰 salary you can. It is not cheap to live here.

Work Visa

Every month that a foreigner lives in the Dominican Republic they must pay $10 dollars to the government.  You pay this fee at the airport✈ when you are leaving to go back to the United States. This is something most people don't know or are not told.  For example if you taught for 10 months you need to pay $120 dollars before boarding the airplane to back home. Keep that in mind or better yet negotiate that into your contract🤔

The only way around it is to become a permanent resident. Some jobs will help you with this but most will not. To apply for a permanent visa it costs between 25,000-40,000 pesos ($600-$800 dollars)👀

This all may seem a bit too much😖 but in the end the experience you gain from living abroad is worth it. The cultural and language awareness and skills will change your life forever. 👋
